New to FarmDrop?

Hey, we want to remind you that FarmDrop is here!

Just a hunch, but if you’re interested in food, climate, local economies, then we have a feeling you’re the type of socially and environmentally-conscious person who is seeking other ways to meaningfully support your local communities, year-round. Perhaps you’re someone who has explored the questions and complications surrounding local food ways and have wished for a year-round weekly option to access Maine-made ingredients or even full meals. It’s possible that you’re someone who cares about where your carrot was grown and by whom and how.

Or maybe you’re just someone who likes to eat really delicious food.

If any (or all) of the above sounds like you, then we strongly suggest you try FarmDrop. A direct to consumer initiative, FarmDrop allows you to shop weekly and online for everything from produce to meat to dairy to coffee to soap to those aforementioned pre-made meals (and so much more!). Here’s how it works:

1. Every week, your virtual farmers’ market opens and you receive an email or text letting you know.

2. At your convenience (markets are generally open for 4-5 days), you shop from an ever-expanding list of 700+ products provided by 35+ local farmers and purveyors, adding things to your cart the way you’ve learned to do from other online retail sites.

3. You receive a reminder when your market is about to close and, if you haven’t already, you submit your order. By the way, we give you the option to repeat last week’s choices with a re-order and safely save payment options for added convenience.

4. You pick up your products at the convenient local spot of your choice that you selected when placing your order, and bring back last week’s bags and reusable containers.

5. That’s it. Welcome to your year-round, personalized, virtual local food shopping experience!

Other important things to know about FarmDrop:

  • Supporting FarmDrop supports Maine: We’ve added six new locations in the past three months alone and we provide local food coordinator gig-economy jobs (with plans to add dozens more jobs across the state in the next two years).

  • Farmers/purveyors are paid as soon as you place your order. Paying farmers in advance, as opposed to at a farmers market or through a retail store, sustains a system whereby farmers only bring what they’ve sold. You know what that means: zero waste!

  • Speaking of reducing waste, supporting small farmers reduces carbon emissions because their methods are regenerative: they build soil and capture more carbon that would otherwise be released into the air.

  • While we’re on the topic, using ingredients from a 100-mile radius in terms of geographic area has so many more economic and environmental benefits! Just to name a few:

    • With FarmDrop you can return reusable containers like the glass jars used for yogurt, milk, jam, and honey. And there is very little plastic involved…ever!

    • By reducing the mileage for both farmers and customers, using FarmDrop means there are fewer vehicles and shorter distances related to moving food.

    • Your weekly FarmDrop market is open long enough for you to see what’s available, plan your weekly meals, and then place your order. That means no more over-shopping, which means more money saved and less food waste.

  • Our model is an evolving entity. Though we’ve been around since 2011, we’ve changed how we work to best suit your needs and the needs of our farmers and local communities, while staying sustainable. That means we invite your feedback and we want you to be involved…

  • That said, we won’t inundate you with messages—we’ll just let you know when your weekly market is open, remind you to place your order, and tell you when your market is about to close. We also might send additional newsletter-style messages or videos once in a while so you can read about and/or watch our local farmers in action.

  • Because that’s another thing: we’re all about human connection. We love sharing the stories behind the people and their products (and sometimes it’s just fun to see a family on their farm playing with their goats).

If you’ve ever found yourself posing the question: How do I want to eat? We think FarmDrop is the answer you’ve been looking for.
