Winter Squash, Butternut, 1.5 lb.


One Butternut squash, a little over a pound and a half. More popular in southern New England since it requires a longer growing season, this moist squash variety is a standard for pie-making as well as mashed squash for pies, muffins, and side dishes. The bulb at the bottom is the seed cavity and above that is a neck of solid squash, making it one of the easiest squashes to prepare. Smooth skin allows using a potato peeler to remove skin. Very flavorful, but not quite as sweet as the buttercup types. Seeds inside may be saved for growing Butternut in your own garden, since this variety does not cross with other squashes.
