The Dansville Granola Company

Did you know the concept of granola started in Dansville?

In the early 20th Century, the Jackson Sanitorium, also called the Our Home on the Hillside or locally referred to as the Castle on the Hill, was run by Dr. James Caleb Jackson. In the late 19th Century, Jackson created a graham flour based biscuit that was baked and then soaked in water called granula.

Dr. John Kellogg from Michigan wanted to sell his version of granula and to avoid a lawsuit, changed the name to granola, and the rest is history.

You can see a piece of the original granula at the Dansville Area Historical Society on Church Street, and the remains of the Jackson Sanitorium are visible on East Hill.
